“Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.” (Psalms 19:11)
The Word of God will give constant warnings to the Developing Disciple. The Word of God will provide great reward for the servants of God. The Bible contains 66 books with more than 30,000 verses. The warnings and the rewards are plenty. They are valuable: “More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.” (Psalms 19:10) We spend our lives seeking to acquire financial security believing this will ensure our happiness. But God’s design for our life is much different from the desired lifestyle we create from our fallen nature.
“The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.” (Proverbs 10:22) The blessing of the LORD is found in the humble surrender to HIS truth. This is faith as we see the promise of God made by the only True God, who has the ability, to fulfill the promise made. The riches could be material, but they most certainly will include the spiritual. If the blessings include the material, the material wealth will not be accompanied by the loss of that which gives true meaning to our life of faith. I believe there are few today who enjoy wealth without sorrow. The purpose of wealth must be to fulfill the will of God and not to steal our affections away from the Son of Righteousness. If our pursuit of wealth steals our affections for our God and Savior, we will discover sorrow. This is a warning, but what of the rewards.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” (Colossians 3:16)
Eternal life is a quality of life that begins in the soul the moment a sinner comes to personal faith in Jesus Christ. It is a new life of grace and faith that brings rewards of love, joy, and peace. We become a part of a new family of believers, whose fellowship we enjoy. Our relationships are strengthened because of the bond we have by way of the Holy Spirit that indwells each one. The blessing is not selfish as it draws our attention to the ONE who gave himself for us and we are changed into HIS likeness.
“Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 17 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” (2 Corinthians 3:17-18)
The reward is Christ himself as HIS image is constantly being restored to our lives. The wisdom, the lovingkindness, the life of God in us matures and we enjoy the riches of HIS grace. This begins in time but will culminate in our presence around HIS throne. At best, this world is wreckage of the fall of man into sin. There are pitfalls, and sorrows, more than anyone cares to know. Therefore, we need to hear the warnings of God and know HIS promises of blessing and provision. There is much to gain and much to lose in this our warfare of the faith.
